Clinical Trials Reporting

Public registration and reporting of clinical trials is essential to minimize publication bias and increase the efficiency of medical research. ClinicalTrials.gov, one of the largest and most successful trial registration initiatives to date, provides an online searchable database of clinical studies of human participants conducted around the world.

How many studies are registered on ClinicalTrials.gov, and how many of these will see their results rapidly published or posted online? The answer, it turns out, largely depends on who is conducting the study.

We counted the total number of trials registered by each leading sponsor (company or research institution), then counted how many of the studies that were initiated and concluded between January 2010 and August 2014 had their results subsequently reported, according to the website (data from 9 December 2015).

As a first step in METRICS' mission to promote incentives for the transparent reporting of reproducible research, we report here below statistics for the major sponsoring organizations (i.e. those with at least 100 trials closed by September 2014), ranked in descending order of total registered trials. More complete data can be downloaded here, whilst larger data sets and more information can be found at: ClinicalTrials.gov.
